Artist Statement about “Nine Polaroids”
Inspired by architecture, art installations, and the natural environment as well as the ‘Rule
of Thirds’, a term in photography that states an image should be imagined as divided into
nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical
lines, I shoot 9 distinct images of various locations around the world.
Using a camera and two mirrors, I am able to transfer the images onto expired Polaroid 669
film which causes unexpected hues and saturation, as well as chemical imperfections in the
image allowing each ninth of the overall photograph to be distinct. I then scan all 9
Polaroids exactly as they are in real life and lay them together in Photoshop without any
digital enhancement. The final product is an inkjet print of the original Polaroids that is as
much a photograph as it is a piece of art.
